“Young Gus McCrae”

A young Gus McCrae, drawn in quick, heavy black strokes. The wide brim of his hat takes up most of the page, and the face underneath is built from just a few marks — enough to catch the easy, half-amused look of a man still early on the trail.

The lines are loose but sure, with smudged edges where the hand moved fast. It reads as a portrait of a character more than a likeness, and it holds the wall with very little.
